Where Are You Goin'?
IRISH GIRL: (spoken)
One… two… three… four…
(sung)
Down on Market Street,
a lonely boy would sweep.
Seen workin' at the docks
each night til nine o'clock.
Ask him and you’d find
just one thing on his mind:
Dreamin’ ‘bout his Pearl.
How he loved that girl.
The story, so it goes is:
She never seemed to notice.
Every day she walked past,
until he fin’lly asked
“Where are you goin’?
Winds, they’re a blowin’.
Maybe you’ll stay awhile?
I think we’re better
if we’re together;
I’d like to make you smile.
Or I’m mistaken;
you’re already taken,
then I’ll be on my way…
But if I were knowin’
where you are goin’…
If I were knowin’ I’d never go astray.”
She’d seen him ‘round before,
but now saw somethin’ more.
She knew there was a chance
for a true romance.
But he said with sorrow:
“I’m shipping out tomorrow.
Just one night with you
would show my love is true.”
So tell me:
Where are you goin’?
Winds, they’re a blowin’.
Maybe you’ll stay awhile?
I think we’re better
if we’re together;
Finally, there’s that smile.
Or I’m mistaken;
you’re already taken,
then I’ll be on my way…
But if I were knowin’
where you are goin’…
Maybe someday when my ship comes in
you’ll be here for me.
And then I see,
eventually,
our own family,
and so, whaddaya say?
(spoken)
Hit it, boys.
(dance break)
(sung)
Where is he goin?
Winds, they’re a blowin’.
He has been gone a while.
Life would be better
if we’re together.
I’d like to see him smile.
But I was forsaken;
my love was taken.
He is still out at sea.
I wish I were knowin’
where he is goin’.
Maybe some day,
when his ship returns,
he’ll be there for me
like a sweet melody,
in his arms I will be
eternally.
And that is where I will stay.
