Seven Vows

Steven Dross

The first vow I made was to love you, with the same love that Christ has for His church
It's a love that's unconditional, it's inseparable, it's for better or worse
A love that forces me to die to self, cuz I can get caught up and get stuck in my ways
Loving you is loving myself, so if I neglect you, I'll fall right on my face
I vowed to be a priest, I vowed to be a leader, I vowed to be the head our household
Though at times it can get real rocky with these crashing waves, it could feel like a houseboat
I choose to be a servant leader, who walks humble to be aligned with His will
Cuz you may see things that I don't, like when the enemies about to go in for the kill
I vowed to have our home be a safe place, where the presence of God can find rest
There's no sense in coming home from work, and adding more burdens to the pile of stress
If God's our foundation, then everything that we will build upon Him will be blessed
Lord, if I go outside of that, use my wife to show me when I'm disrupting our nest
I vowed to be transparent, to let you know where I'm coming from, so I can be more apparent
And now that we're parents, let's raise these kids to know the ways of the Lord and to not be aberrant
You're not a mind reader, so if I'm getting frustrated, then it's my responsibility to communicate
To eliminate all the pests and the show the evidence of God through our love is how we authenticate

No matter what we'll go through, I vowed to speak life and to always support you
You have so many gifts and dreams that it's way too costly for me to ignore you
Through all seasons, our prayer life led by the Spirit will produce perseverance
So as faith worketh patience, love keeps erasing the things that be causing interference
I vowed to remain a student, though I graduated, there's still tons of lessons
My mistakes are my study guides to know what not to do to receive His blessings
At times I got a short fuse, I'm a Puerto Rican what you want me to do
That no longer can be my excuse so I promise to grow and mature with you
I now come to vow number seven, which glues all the others to make us a match made in heaven
I compromised and had to recognize that the loaf gets spoiled from way too much leaven
So I abandoned my boyish ways and left my bachelor thinking right at the altar
For a double minded man cannot stand, so I unite with you so this love won't falter
Love is patient, Love is kind, Keeps us adjacent with Christ in mind
Love protects, Love always trusts, His Spirit directs us over lusts
Love hopes, Love perseveres, three stranded rope to avoid the tears
Love never fails, the tale of that cross with those bloody nails, His love never fails

I really feel that there's a couple of things that I should bring to your attention
I could go on and on but with a minute left, here's a few I'd like to mention
If you're in ministry and your neglecting your wife, then my brother your killing me
And if you have kids saying parent me, then apparently you're not really fatherly
Your wife is beauty, you come home like a beast
You're not giving you just take as you please
Forsaking your duties at home as a priest
The enemies robbing the joy and the peace
That you're supposed to bring into your own home
Daughter's slitting her wrists when she's alone
Son is obsessed with sex cuz of the porn
Your so out of the loop that you do not know what's going on
Brothers and sisters, realize what you're doing
Coming together to make a communion
Is there something that you're just not admitting
Is there someone stopping you from committing
Put that side piece back in the bucket
Throw it away before you start to plummet
You're Pop-eyed, cuz your options are open
But cock-eyed cuz immaturity's showing
I come in the name of love so I could preach
Come in the name of hope so I could teach
In the name of faith believing to reach the broken-hearted
God is love and love is God, no greater love than the one that He started
In sickness or health, through good or through bad
Till death do us part, if you try to divide us... you better have body bags
