unrequited colors

Camille Manalo

My hand trembles, picking up the light brush
Staring at full bottles of paint
And the canvas left empty, untouched
No splotch of paint could be seen

Should I paint what I imagine we could be
Two colors that blend so beautifully
Would that really change everything
Or make us see more transparently

Alas these unrequited colors
Pervade the portrait's center
Without ever blending together
From monochromatic seas of color
With every curve, every line
No intersection, nor intertwine
Perhaps there'll come a time when colors requite

Still, there's a line drawn between two
One drips slowly but couldn't seep through
Dry was the other, unmoving till the canvas was filled
With something other than dust

Ever slightly, the two colors met
Moving so pensive the paint was set
Did they blend past the line, overlap it too
Was it worth the losing the two

Alas these unrequited colors
Pervade the portrait's center
Without ever blending together
From monochromatic seas of color
With every curve, every line
No intersection, nor intertwine
Perhaps there'll come a time when colors requite

Perhaps there'll come a time when colors requite
