Freddie’s Walkin’ (Live, 1989)

Chuck Mangione

[Intro]
We thank you very much for all that
It's really a treat
You know, I played in this room with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers
I played here for a Kai Winding memorial benefit
Never got to play here with my band
This is a nice room to make music in
And you people make it feel real good
We're gonna do a song that, uh, I wrote, uh, for my sister's son
My godson Freddie
For those of you who don't know about Freddie
When Freddie was born he was born a very big baby
And they thought he was dеveloping slowly because of his sizе
But at the age of two and a half he wasn't walking yet
And they found out he had cerebral palsy
So they took him to a great place in Rochester, New York
Called the Al Sigl Center
Where they work with young people with problems like this
And after a very short time they had him walking
Freddie's now about to turn twenty-one
He's graduated from college
He's having a great time
He's a happening kid
So we're gonna do a song called "Freddie's Walkin'"

[Verse 1]
We thank the Lord 'cause Freddie's walkin' (Yeah)
We thank you Lord 'cause Freddie's walkin'
Freddie's wearin' a smile and rightly so
'Cause now his feet, they know how to go
We thank the Lord, yeah, 'cause Freddie's walkin'

[Verse 2]
We thank you Lord, yeah, 'cause Freddie's walkin' (Yeah)
Thank the Lord, yeah, huh, 'cause Freddie's walkin'
Now Freddie's steppin' out and holdin' his head up high
With his pretty blue eyes just lookin' up toward the sky (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
We thank the Lord 'cause Freddie's walkin' (Whoo)

[Chorus]
Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin'
Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin'
Oh, thank you Lord

[Verse 3]
Thank the Lord and Freddie, too (Yeah)
For remindin' us of what love can do
So now with every step Freddie takes
Let's each of us a new friend make
We thank the Lord, yeah, 'cause Freddie's walkin' (Oh yeah, yeah)

[Chorus]
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Yeah, yeah
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
I'm gonna show you now
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
I'm gonna tell you about Freddie
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Well, well when Freddie was a little baby boy
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
It took him way too long to learn how to walk
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
So everybody got down on their knees, yeah yeah
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Everybody got down on their knees and they prayed
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
They prayed to the Lord
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Yes we did, we prayed to the Lord
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
We said, we said, dear Lord
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Oh please Lord, Lord, Lord
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
One thing, yeah, one thing
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Said I really got one thing
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Freddie come on
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
I said, Freddie come on
(Freddie's walkin', Freddie's walkin')
Oh, thank you, thank you Lord (Woah yeah)

[Outro]
Gordon Johnson
Bonadio
Martin
Manetta
Mathes
And Vadala
And all you guys out there
Thank you so much
Bye bye
