Caller103

Karina Gill

I guess today was her lucky day
She was caller number 103
She cried at her desk and she screamed in the phone
When the dj said her name
She hoped somehow that wherever he is
By chance he would be listening
But how would he know that if he only came home
Every dollar would be his?
Later that night at her kitchen table
She tried to think of someone to call
Eventually she finished her drink
And threw her damn phone at the wall
Oh where are the keys to the kingdom?
Open the door and walk right in
I guess that morning was like any morning
He was leaving for work on time
He was closing the door when he heard her say
Baby I'm so glad that you're mine
He wanted to stop, maybe say something back
But what, he wasn't sure
Now in the hall he could hear the sounds
From the tv of the lady next door
She sat on her bed, heard his engine start
Picked some paint off of her nails
She thought, I'll be fine
This won't be the first time
That some fool has set me free.
What I'll need when he leaves me
is high-heeled shoes and stupid perfume
karate class on Wednesday night
and a fresh coat of paint in this room.
Where are the keys to the kingdom?
Open the door and walk right in.
They tell me today could be the first day
Of a new life and a brand new start
But they don't see that it seems to me
I'm just a ragged sum of my parts
There's no sunken treasure
There's no diamond to mine
There are no letters in the mailbox
There's no ghost out there, rattling chains
That's just the sound of my empty cage
So you can keep your life and your brand-new heart
My baby's hands are wrecked and they're worn
His voice is low and he looks away
When I put myself into his arms
Where are the keys to the kingdom?
Open the door and walk right in.
