It's A Fine Day

Francis Tran

It's a fine day
People open windows
They leave their houses
Just for a short while

They walk by the grass
And they look at the grass
They look at the sky

They walk by the grass
And they look at the grass
They look at the sky

It's going to be a fine night tonight
It's going to be a fine day tomorrow
It's going to be a fine night tonight
It's going to be a fine day tomorrow

It was not long ago when feelings blossomed over a fresh landscape
And even when it rained
Life crawled through the dirt and the cracks
Now I step across a wasteland
Every step sinks into the dying ground and feels its sickening groans as it folds beneath the sole
It heaves and regurgitates and coughs its ashes
Critters jitter restlessly over the earth
And she only watches with wide, red eyes
Too tired to move, yet restless
Having eaten herself through, inside out
Left ill and dying
She is horrid
Eyes darting
Restless
For something, something, anything, more, nothing
Something to take in and to occupy
To almost pretend
She knows it all, yes
But stop it she cannot
The air is thick with ash
The ground is gray
The sky is so black one thinks they’re isolated even from the stars
As though quarantined
