Animal & Man (Part One)

Jeff Wayne

Spartacus:
To suffer myself
To be whipped with rods
Burned with fire
Or killed by steel
If I disobey
If I...

Crowd:
Jugula, jugala! Jugula, jugala!
Jugula, jugala! Jugula, jugala!

Crassus: The beasts roared and the crowd roared! Twenty thousand people cramming the amphitheatre at Capua. A feverish sea of humanity. Noblemen and commoners alike, eager for spectacle, terrors and monstrosities; lusting for blood and death in the circus of carnage

Crassus: And it was there that I, Marcus Crassus was given the place of honour as a magnificent procession entered the arena: jugglers, fire-eaters, dwarves, freaks and strange creatures from far-off lands. Then, in chariot of gold, drawn by six white stallions rode the Master of the Games

Crowd:
Jugula, jugala! Jugula, jugala!

Crassus: The procession left the arena. The Sacrificial Bull was slain and the first blood spilled upon the sand

Crowd:
Jugula, jugala!

Crassus: The crowd waited with excited expectation

Crowd:
Jugula, jugala!

Crassus: Herded into the circus now were men, woman and children, thieves, murderers and runaway slaves - valueless other than for our entertainment, they were brought here to die

Crowd:
Jugula, jugala!

Crassus: Trap doors sprang open - lions, wolves, elephants and bears rushed into the arena. The crowd roared. The beasts roared, growled, bayed, barked and yelped

Crowd:
Jugula, jugala!

Crassus: Fear and rage possessed the animals as they turned upon their terrified victims

Crowd:
Jugula, jugala! Jugula, jugala!

Crassus: With all the qualities of our great Republic - statesmanship, philosophy, the arts - we still require this primitive pageant

Crassus: And why do we need this show of butchery? To satisfy the mob and keep them servile and content!

Crassus: I looked at the spectators, half-mad with ecstasy. I looked at the creatures, half-mad with terror. Animal and man - one and the same!

Crassus: The carcasses where dragged from the arena. Fresh white sand was laid and jets of perfumed water sprayed into the stinking air

Crassus: The arena was scattered with semi-precious stones that sparkled in the sun

Crassus: The stage was set for the entry of the gladiators
