The Grave Digger

D Butler

He wanders this ghostly yard
In the fog of distance
Spirits of past stare
As he searches for where you are

A single grave grave dug six feet wide
And twelve feet deep
Twice the size
But meant for one to sleep

His shovel strikes deep into the heart of the ground
Cutting each artery and tearing each vein
The cruelty in his purpose to keep him safe
The grave digger digs his final grave

Staring wildly at this hole
The clouds start to mourn his loss
As he steps into the open wound
He dug their grave where he now lies

His shovel lay next to his corpse
In a grave meant for two souls
The murder of a complex love
The grave dug to hold a lonely dove

Why
He cries to the sky
Must he die for the sake of love
As tears fall from the sky
He is left to die
You dug our grave
Now lie
The last words he heard
