Owl Song (Demo)

Margaret Breeden

I walked out of my house
And saw an owl stare me down
Its eyes showed no surprise as I
Came close to look around
Instead, it kept on staring
Just to open its beak
And ask me how the weather is
In a language we both speak
I hit it with a rock
'Cause owls aren't supposed to talk
Then walked back in my house
To take a nap
And in my dreams appeared
My feathered victim looking weird
One of those round eyes
Missing from its head
It said it put its eye
Right in the corner just to see
The moment that I die
So that its soul could be at peace
I said that was impossible
I'm never gonna die
Then I took off my right shoe
And threw it in his one good eye
Yeah, I hit that bird again
Looked like he asked for it to me
'Cause he looks so much scarier
And now he's in my dreams
Whatever guilt he was trying to manifest
I fist-fought off and I'm feeling my best
You came down the stairs
And saw me talking to myself
I said the owl I had killed
Came to show me how it felt
The next day you were gone
So now I guess that it's just us
I give a big ol' toothy grin
So he doesn't think he won
I guess we're roommates now
Although he never helps with bills
Just watches with one eye
Gives me a look I think could kill
But secretly I fear the day he wants to leave my home
'Cause if he does, then I'd be alone
