THE CITY STREETS

Kenneth Mongeon

The night falls over the city streets, they're lighting their neon signs
Look over there on the avenue, there's a man reading "New York Times"
But all this ain't got nothin' to do with me
I'm just lookin' to see what I can see

So, I walk down here, and I drive up there, I haven't found the 4th of July
And I hear the screams of a dying man, but he isn't hearing mine
The lights are on, but the darkness is lingering
And I hear questions that no one's answering

I'm standing alone on the city streets, searching the crowd for a smile
All is silent and all is forgotten, there was love here for a while
Stranded again in Manhattan, and there's a number tattooed on my hand
If I had a dime, I'd call her again, and ask if I could be her man!

I'd change my lifestyle; I'd cut my hair and shine these tattered boots I wear
Yeah, yeah ... I'd get a job; I'd buy a car ... I'd call her if she were there
Oooo hooo

The dawn falls over the city streets, The early morning rumble begins
A million or more off to earn their keep, where's the loser who always wins?
All my bags are packed and I'm at Port Authority
Where transportation is bound for a better place to be
