I Can't Sleep at Night

CARL DACARIOUS NELSON

I can’t sleep at night,
And lord I’ve been trying,
I’ve got to find a better way,
To deal with stress that’s on my mind.
Maybe I’m volatile and I need to chill,
But it ain’t like I haven’t tried,
I’d rather die than tell that lie.

I’m staring at an empty shot glass,
It’s the last shot for me,
Bartender its five minutes till closing,
Please pour a shot for me.
If Hollywood can capture Pi’s life,
Can they shoot mine for me.
What’s sad is when you put in the work,
And failure is all you get,
Been working on these blueprints for years,
But haven’t built it yet,
It’s draining me, I’ve given my all,
My blood, my tears, my sweat.
I stare inside my mirror,
My reflection’s staring back at me,
A picture of a man,
Who knows to well my inner tragedies,
I tell him keep his cool,
I swear I working out a strategy.

I can’t sleep at night,
And lord I’ve been trying,
I’ve got to find a better way,
To deal with stress that’s on my mind.
Maybe I’m volatile and I need to chill,
But it ain’t like I haven’t tried,
I’d rather die than tell that lie.

Yeah, ignore that strategy,
The man inside the mirror,
Stares back at me with his gun,
I said that pistol pointed at me,
Hasn’t been the only one,
Sure as a fiend hits the crack pipe,
I’ve seen it in my early days.
Momma worked one hour for,
For eight dollars, that’s the legal way,
The love of money leads to evil,
This is what the preacher said,
Born into a surgery,
Blood’s not flowing to my lower legs.
Yeah, I count my blessings,
Because some folks didn’t get that go ahead,
Grab yourself a snack, take a seat,
And watch the show ahead,
Reflecting on my life ain’t always easy.
The price I paid in money,
Will never run the show for me,
Dictate what I’d be,
Open or close any doors for me.
I’ll make it if I’ve got to, its only me.

I can’t sleep at night,
And lord I’ve been trying,
I’ve got to find a better way,
To deal with stress that’s on my mind.
Maybe I’m volatile and I need to chill,
But it ain’t like I haven’t tried,
I’d rather die than tell that lie.

And I don’t write club bangers,
That’s not my swagger,
Beat my fists against the bricks,
And carve my name upon the mantle,
Just to let you know my Journey,
On this paved road that I’ve traveled.
See, I precede myself,
I swear I’m living in my shadow.
Tell my servants cast my armor,
Get my horse, It’s time for battle.
I’m fatigued but I can’t quit,
So I’ll keep running into things.
I’m naïve, my future’s worse,
From where I sit, so here’s to change.
The rich people get breaks,
So they continue playing games,
The poor man pays his dollars to the rich,
Then lives off change,
Then he cries beside his family,
His life is such a strain.
We’re supposed to be good,
But this is life in the hood.

I can’t sleep at night,
And lord I’ve been trying,
I’ve got to find a better way,
To deal with stress that’s on my mind.
Maybe I’m volatile and I need to chill,
But it ain’t like I haven’t tried,
I’d rather die than tell that lie.
