Clive Staples
As I knock on this door-the burden I bear
Thought can hardly sustain it volumes couldn't contain it
It's a wandering desire-unsure of it's object
Like the evasive scent of a flower I have not yet found
This hid treasures buried deep underground
I can look into the light but I cannot mingle with the splendor that I see
I can only observe-I have just overheard
As a stranger in the shadows of the universe
A stranger in the shadows of the world under a curse
Beauty has smiled but not to welcome me I'm taken prisoner by her glance
Still my feet stand in the shadows on the outside of the dance
Will you turn your approving smile upon me
And say you've taken pleasure in my service to you
I've been banished from Eden
Fiery sword that blocks my way to the garden of the day
But there's a passage through the flame-an escape from the shadows
You have taken all my blame-I've fallen short but you say my name
I can look into your eyes for the leaves are rustling with this rumor with this news
I have been summoned inside-the door's been flung wide open
Someday the shadows of the universe will disappear
The smoke that lingers in the darkness will disperse
Turn my vision to the mountains turn my gaze to kingdom come
Draw the shades open the shutters to the blaze of the risen Sun
Will you turn your approving smile upon me
And say you've taken pleasure in my service to you
