Beauty And The Beast

Marc Teitler, Tim Phillips, Tom Morris, Carl grose

GRINPAYNE
[Spoken] Beauty… [grunt] Beauty… [grunt] Where are you? I’m… dying… I’m… bleurgh

DEA
[Spoken] Beast! Oh, Beast! Oh, Beast! I am too late

[Sung]
How could I have known you’d die if I did not return?
If you’d only told me I’d have never gone away

[Spoken] What happens next, Father?

URSUS
[Spoken] Beauty has to tell the Beast she loves him

DEA
[Sung]
I love you
I love you

GRINPAYNE
[Spoken] Kiss him!

DEA
[Spoken] Oh, yes! Mwah!

GRINPAYNE
[Sung]
Never did I dream that I would hear you say those words
Only those three words could ever free me from the curse
Dear Beauty

DEA
[Spoken] Yes?

GRINPAYNE
[Sung]
I love you

GRINPAYNE & DEA
Mwah mwah mwah mwah mwah mwah mwah!

DEA
[Sung]
How could I have known a prince would find me in the snow?

GRINPAYNE
[Spoken] Oh, I’d like to be a lord, and wake up in a real palace

DEA
[Spoken] You’re nothing like a lord!

[Sung]
Prince Grinpayne
I love you

GRINPAYNE & DEA
[Spoken, as themselves] Whoa! [Laughing, whooping.]

[The Company spin them round in the air. The box is removed. The whole stage is movement and light. Before you realise it, it’s Grinpayne and Dea, grown up, no longer puppets, holding hands and spinning each other round. They slow to a stop and Grinpayne draws Dea to him.]

GRINPAYNE
[Sung, as himself] Never did I dream that you might save me from despair
You have given me the gift of life, a love to share
I love you
I love you

[The stage is still now. It’s just Grinpayne and Dea, standing together facing each other, in profile to the audience. Grinpayne cradles Dea’s hands in his between their chests. Dea never quite looks him in the eyes, always looking slightly off centre as a reminder of her blindness, though she always smiles broadly as though she can see him. They kiss. It’s a tender, intimate moment, intensely private, as the music swells around them.]

GRINPAYNE & DEA
[Sung, as themselves] Your kiss of life has opened my eyes
The place where my heart breaks, you have mended
Your gift of love has given me life
My sorrow and heartache, you have melted

I love you
I love you

[A bell chimes, interrupting the song.]

OSRIC
[Spoken from the side of the stage] The Great Bell of Bermondsey!
