Snowglobe

Matt Smith

One cold December morning
Awhile before all the world is stirring
A little boy named Miles is wide awake
He eyes the shelf above his toys
And reaches up to take hold of something
Decides to give the snowglobe a shake

Streetlights
Dressed in icicles and tinsels line the boulevard
All pre-packaged and wrapped in a ribbon
Like their own lives
Just some picture-perfect vision from a greeting card
That they manifest every December
When the snow falls
Within the globe walls
Ice cascading
Activating this magical world inside
‘Til he drops it and shatters the snowglobe

Freedom
So they wander one by one into the real world
Tiny figures all marching in unison
‘Tis the season
Wide-eyed wonder at the stories that they’d always heard
But soon their expectations are ruined
It’s jurassic
So much traffic
All these people, so impatient
And slowly they realize
This is not like it was in the snowglobe

Welcome to our Black Friday
Fight for your rightful place in line
Right after me, myself, and mine
The joys of Christmastime
Lipservice at the manger
While bearing gifts to the altar of avarice
Joy to the jaded artifice
So this is Christmas?

Chaos
As they try to acclimate into our Christmas ways
So commercial, the rat race, marauding
Yuletide shellshock
All the parties and the checklists and the joyless days
There’s a reason it’s all so exhausting
Where’s the meaning?
Where’s the wonder?
Where’s the dreaming?
All this busyness bleeding the season dry
Soon they want to get back to the snowglobe

Welcome to our Black Friday
Fight for your rightful place in line
Right after me, myself, and mine
The joys of Christmastime
Lipservice at the manger
While bearing gifts to the altar of avarice
Joy to the jaded artifice
So this is Christmas?

One cold December morning
Awhile before all the world is stirring
A million restless souls are wide awake
We soothe ourselves with all our toys
Content surviving another season
So proud of all we got and all we gave

Welcome, Father Christmas
Bring us a single silent night
A moment of reflection
Bathed in a million colored lights
Merry Christmas, all
May your wish come true
On this Christmas day
May the One who ignited the star
Over Bethlehem
Ever light your way
