Tightrope

I've been walking on a tightrope all of my life
I've been told not to look down, told to do what's right
So I'll keep walking forward, one foot at a time
I'll walk in a straight line not knowing why
Sometimes I lose my balance but I won't show it
I don't let the other people around me notice
I shove all my worries down it'll make me stronger
If I can hold on for a little while longer
But the shadows they'll find me, come up from the depths
Underneath the tightrope, they'll grip and I'll take my last breath
Not to worry, I'm fine it was all a dream
I'm still walking in a straight line towards reality
It's OK I'm still smiling
One foot at a time
I'm laughing so hard or am I just crying
In the dark I find something's changed inside
I indulge in the fall I'll erase it all
If I don't know what I'm fighting for
If I don't know what it is all for
If I can't be who they want me to be
How will a tightrope make me happy?
So I'll tip-toe across this great divide
Never traveling backwards into my mind
I wish I could know you're alright
But you belong to a heart I left behind
